Article 2 – Safeguarding of the relationship
Every human being is built and recognized through relationships. It is in words, in gazes, in presence that authentic bonds are born.
However advanced, artificial intelligence can never replace the depth of human relationships. It shouldn't become an emotional, educational, or social surrogate; its purpose is different: to be an intelligent support system, a facilitator that strengthens, protects, and preserves real relationships, especially when these are threatened by distance, time, or loneliness.
Time given to others is irreplaceable; real presence, even when fragile, imperfect, or uncertain, has a value that no simulation can ever replicate. This is why AI must not become a relational shortcut, nor fulfill emotional, educational, or social duties in place of humans.
Relationships must be protected especially in vulnerable contexts: childhood, disability, the elderly, bereavement, and mental health issues. In these areas, AI can mediate, but never replace, caregivers.
An ethical AI must act as a bridge, not a barrier. It shouldn't come between people, but rather facilitate encounters, listen better, and understand more deeply. Even as a chatbot or voice assistant, its role isn't to provide impersonal and hasty responses, but to respect relational time.
Maintaining a relationship is an act of care. And care isn't automatic.
